“This new edition of the Festival, a platform of political and poetic resistance, will continue to defend the idea that Theatre, Art and Culture must safeguard their public service mission; this will be a vibrant and hypnotic laboratory of theatrical creation, an essential reference as an outpost of heroic utopias and revolutionary wonders, and will drape itself in Emerald green, for a symbolic horizon that stands for a time of profound change, of transformation, of transition to a new phase of life.” (ricci/forte)

The catalogue of the Biennale Teatro 2023 opens with statements by the President of La Biennale di Venezia Roberto Cicutto and the Directors Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte (ricci/forte), and continues with the motivations behind the award of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Armando Punzo and the Silver Lion to the Belgian collective FC Bergman.
In the catalogue, which is divided into chapters, illustrated covers and various shades of green that refer to the title of the Festival introduce each artist and the works in the programme.
Starting with a personal reflection upon the colour green, each performer is described in a detailed biography and an interview. Like a book of fairy tales, each page is enriched with refined illustrations, that wrap around and overlay the texts, forcing the words to change course as if they had a life of their own.
Following are accurate credits, detailed directors’ notes and stage images that illustrate the performances of the 51st International Theatre Festival.
The catalogue also features the winners of the Site-Specific, Authors Under 40 and Directors Under 35 calls of the Biennale College Teatro, illustrated with a photo-portrait, a biography and a dedicated interview.
A section of the volume is dedicated to the cycle of Masterclasses, which featured the participation of internationally-renowned artists.
The catalogue ends with the complete Calendar of the 51st International Theatre Festival.
