ABSOLUTE MUSIC
The catalogue of the Biennale Musica 2024 opens with introductions by the President of La Biennale di Venezia Roberto Cicutto and the Artistic Director Lucia Ronchetti which present the 6 sections of the Festival with significant details: Polyphonies, Assolo, Stylus Listening/Hearing, Sound Structures, Absolute Jazz, Counterpoints, Solo Electronics, Pure Voices, Musica Reservata e Ricercare. Furthermore, Lucia Ronchetti explains in an article her choices for the Biennale College Musica 2024.
The volume continues with the motivations for awarding the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Rebecca Saunders and the Silver Lion to Ensemble Modern. They are followed by essays written by Michael Struck-Schloen, Paul Griffiths, Michael Rebhahn and Ilija Trojanow, which review the history and works of the two Lions.
The analytical essays were written by Sarah Collins, Marcello Ruta, Stefano Lombardo Vallauri, Ingrid Pustijanac, Lukas Daum, Ali Nikrang, Paolo Da Col, Kees Vlaardingerbroek, and further explore the themes of the Festival. The book then features an essay by Lydia Krifka-Dobes which describes the genesis of her piece Wandering the Piano for the Biennale College Musica 2023.
The catalogue presents a chronological programme of the Festival with the performances, installations and projects of the Biennale College.
For each performance, in addition to the list and biographies of the composers, musicians and performers, there is a short introduction to the work written by the artists.
The book also contains information on the Round Tables and Lectures in the programme and on the cycle of Lezioni di musica, , the programme broadcast by Radio Rai 3 live from Ca’ Giustinian. Among the activities of the Festival, the catalogue features a note dedicated to the “Premio della Giuria degli Studenti dei Conservatori italiani’”.
The volume continues with the biographies of the artists and the day-to-day presentation of the Journal Calendar of the 68th International Festival of Contemporary Music.
A section is dedicated to Echi di Micro-Music, which details the “journey” of the new works commissioned and performed within Biennale Musica 2023. The catalogue ends with the general information of the 68th International Festival of Contemporary Music
