A CONFERENCE ON THE USE OF ARCHIVES IN THE BIENNALE ARCHITETTURA 2012 COMMON GROUND

Proceedings of the First International Conference Archives and Exhibitions, held  on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October 2012 and organized by La Biennale di Venezia – ASAC (Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts) as part of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition with the collaboration of the Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici del Veneto – Soprintendenza Archivistica per il Veneto. The conference began with a reflection on the use of archives in the Biennale Architettura 2012 – Common Ground, curated by David Chipperfield. The theme of the exhibition directed the participants to reflect on issues concerning “continuity, context, memory and towards shared expectations” and were encouraged by the curator to demonstrate the importance of the influence and continuity of cultural commitment, to illustrate “common ideas that form the basis of an architectural culture”. Among the architects invited by David Chipperfield many have drawn, in this sense, in the definition of their participation, from materials of the architectural archives.
