MICRO-MUSIC
The catalogue of the Biennale Musica 2023 opens with introductions by the President of La Biennale di Venezia Roberto Cicutto and the Artistic Director Lucia Ronchetti which present the 6 sections of the Festival with significant details: Sound Microscopies, Sound Installations / Sound Exhibitions, Stylus Phantasticus – The Sound Diffused by Venetian Organs, Club Micro-Music, Sound Studies and Digital Sound Horizons.
The volume continues with the motivations for awarding the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Brian Eno and the Silver Lion to Miller S. Puckette. They are followed by essays written by Tom Service, Marcello Lorrai, Nina Sun Eidsheim & Juliana Snapper which review the history and works of the two Lions. Brian Eno and Miller S. Puckette have also contributed to the catalogue with two essays in which they reflect upon their practices in the field of music.
The analytical essays were written by Philip Sherburne, Matteo Pasquinelli, Arif Kornweitz, Paolo Da Col, Guy Ben-Ary, Nathan Thompson, Darren Moore, Andrew Fitch, Stuart Hodgets and Bill Dietz, and further explore the themes of the Festival.
Lucia Ronchetti explains in an article her choices for the Biennale College Musica 2023, with ten new productions for the Digital Sound Horizons section of the Festival. The book then features an essay by Paul Hauptmeier which describes the genesis of his piece Diaphanous Sound for the Biennale Musica 2022.
The catalogue presents a chronological programme of the Festival with the performances, installations and projects of the Biennale College.
The catalogue of the 67th International Festival of Contemporary Music is enriched by the illustrations of Melissa Santamaria. Alluding to the title of the Festival, the abstract figures illustrated in different colours are reminiscent of digital elements and microscopic forms that seem to emerge from the pages and slip into the texts.
For each performance, in addition to the list and biographies of the composers, musicians and performers, there is a short introduction to the work written by the artists.
The book also contains information on the Round Tables and Lectures in the programme and on the cycle of Lezioni di musica, , the programme broadcast by Radio Rai 3 live from Ca’ Giustinian.
One section of the catalogue is dedicated to Echi di Choruses, cwhich details the “journey” of the new works commissioned and performed within Biennale Musica 2022 “beyond the Festival in collaboration with the composers and other concert institutions and European radio stations”.
Among the activities of the Festival, the catalogue features a note dedicated to the ‘Premio della Giuria degli Studenti dei Conservatori italiani’.
The catalogue closes with the day-to-day presentation of the Journal Calendar of the 67th International Festival of Contemporary Music.
