IL TEATRO E LA DRAMMATURGIA

The 47^th International Theatre Festival, held in Venice from July 22^nd to  August 5^th 2019, explores the role and the power of dramaturgy in contemporary theatre.

The catalogue of Biennale Teatro 2019 establishes an ideal dialogue between making dramaturgy and the art of cooking, both of which can be refreshed with a sagacious use of ingredients and raw materials; writing a text or elaborating a visual score thus starts to look like writing a recipe, with its rules and its grammar. The artists at the Festival tell their own story in the catalogue, writing mostly in the first person, talking about themselves with no mediations in a narrative that becomes a text for the theatre, biographies written in the form of a monologue or a dialogue that is in fact a dramaturgy, leading to the presentation of authentic pages from the original scripts of the plays presented at La Biennale and the meticulous description of their favourite dishes; all of which contribute to the creation of a menu in which the dishes, ideally represented by the protagonists of the Festival and by their contributions,  are served to the public or to the reader as precious tools for understanding. Or, perhaps, as clues to investigate in the work of a potential detective, exploring the complex territory of dramaturgy.
