A JOURNEY THROUGH IMAGES OF REVOLUTIONARY PERFORMANCES

The exhibition The Idea of the Body presented a collection of photographs and posters of the homonymous exhibition inaugurated on June 3rd 2014 and curated by the Director of the Dance Department Virgilio Sieni, in La Biennale di Venezia’s headquarter at Ca’ Giustinian, dedicated to the identification of the most significant moments of the dance history, forerunners and source of inspiration for the generations to come.

The catalogue collects the visual material found in Historical Archives of La Biennale di Venezia and documents, through images dating back to the period between 1960 and 1976, the experiences of artists such as Merce Cunningham, Steve Paxton, Simone Forti, Julian Beck and Meredith Monk, which took place outside the theatres, and which shift the focus on urban planning and the geography of the city’s spaces. Over the years, these artists have carried out a 360 degree research and have transformed the nature of the place into the backbone of their dramaturgy, up to asking their audience for an unprecedented attention and reading of their artistic works, documented through a well-defined path within this collection.
