ART AS A GUIDE FOR HOW TO LIVE AND THINK IN \u201c\u200bINTERESTING TIMES\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a058th International Art Exhibition<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>titled\u00a0May You Live In Interesting Times<\/strong><\/em>, took place from 11th May to 24th November 2019 in Venice. It\u2019s named after a phrase that has been invoked in speeches by Western politicians for over a hundred years as an \u201cancient Chinese curse\u201d, even though such a curse never actually existed. Curator Ralph Rugoff describes this \u201ccounterfeit curse\u201d\u00a0as an \u201cuncertain artefact… at once suspect and rich in meaning\u201d, noting that it suggests \u201cpotential lines of exploration that are worth pursuing at present, especially when the \u2018interesting times\u2019\u00a0it evokes seem to be with us once again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volume I<\/strong>\u00a0of the catalogue is dedicated to the\u00a0International Exhibition<\/strong>, curated by Ralph Rugoff, and begins with an essay setting out the themes of the show. The 79 artists participating in the exhibition are each introduced in illustrated texts written by a distinguished team of international writers. Two expansive sequences of full-page colour plates of works that will be displayed in the exhibition venues allow the reader to experience the show\u2019s vibrant mix of paintings, drawings, sculpture and immersive installations.
\nVolume II<\/strong>\u00a0of the catalogue presents the 89\u00a0National Participations<\/strong>\u00a0and the 21\u00a0Collateral Events<\/strong>\u00a0of the 58th International Art Exhibition; lavishly illustrated, it includes texts that explore the various projects\u00a0on display.<\/p>\n
