CENSURA

The 48th International Theatre Festival was conceived as a “Padiglione Teatro Italia”, a collective exposition of Italian artists, on stage from September 14th to 25th 2020 in Venice, with 28 titles for 40 performances, all premieres based on a single theme, censorship.

The catalogue of Biennale Teatro 2020 tells the story, in over 500 pages, of the artists and works featured at the Festival. “We asked all the artists, explained the Director Antonio Latella, to actively take part in the creation of the catalogue, asking them to lay themselves bare in a biography, written in their own hand, which is ‘uncensored’, meaning without omitting details or episodes that are generally left out in official publications. Furthermore, the artists themselves have written the presentations of their plays, paying particular attention to the theme of the Festival, which orients and has oriented their work. Finally, and even ironically, we asked them to think of pleasantries, of the platitudes people often say at the end of the performance to the protagonists of the piece they have just seen, to say goodbye while keeping one’s own thoughts secret. Yet another, rather amusing, way to hide”.

The last chapter, titled Rielaborazioni artistiche dovute al Covid-19, was added later, inviting director and companies to the test of a mise-en-scène in a time of post-health emergency provisions.

The catalogue is based on a concept by the Director of the Biennale Teatro, Antonio Latella. The layout and graphic design are by Headline.
